Safety
        on the whole way!

As part of ongoing efforts to improve road traffic safety and enhance the comfort of citizens in Astana, an innovative traffic signal, a Kazakhstani development by SMEU Astana LLP, has been constructed and commissioned on Uly-Dala Avenue, near the Small store.

ИСРСО 1

This new installation was implemented in response to resident requests and addresses the needs of both drivers and pedestrians. The traffic signal provides a safe and regulated pedestrian crossing across one of the busiest urban highways, and also facilitates U-turns and turns for vehicles heading towards nearby residential areas and schools.

ИСРСО 2

During the design of the traffic signal system, particular attention was given to creating an accessible environment for people with limited mobility, including individuals with disabilities and elderly citizens. The traffic signal is equipped with a special blue pedestrian push-button, differentiating it from standard solutions used throughout the city.

Pressing the lower part of this button activates a special mode, including:

  • An extended pedestrian phase duration, enabling citizens with reduced mobility to safely cross the roadway;
  • Voice prompts, informing visually impaired pedestrians about the walk signal and the beginning of the crossing;
  • An adaptive algorithm for pedestrian countdown timers, automatically recalculating the signal duration to account for the activation of the special phase.

ИСРСО 3

Thus, the new traffic signal exemplifies an integrated approach to ensuring the safety and inclusivity of urban transport infrastructure.

Currently, two traffic signal complexes have been constructed and commissioned in the city of Astana. A phased increase in their number is planned for the future.

 Traffic light uninterruptible power supply (UPS)

 Currently, in the city of Astana, over 150 uninterruptible power supplies are in operation at traffic signal installations, tasked with continuously supporting the operation of the traffic signals during emergency power outages (from 4 to 8 hours). This technical solution has proven its value and significantly reduced the number of unplanned traffic signal outages at central intersections of the city. The technical solution is based on equipment from a leading manufacturer, VICTRON ENERGY. Notably, this equipment incorporates its own communication modem and is integrated with the city's automated traffic management system (ASUDD), enabling dispatchers and technical staff to remotely monitor the power supply status of traffic signals.

The integrated road controller provides automatic or manual control of traffic signals, both at a local intersection and at intersections included in a centrally coordinated traffic management system.

SCAE road controllers used in the cities of Astana and Shymkent are integrated into the Automated Traffic Management System and provide adaptive operating modes for traffic signal systems and remote control via commands from the ASUDD operator.

To ensure and enhance road traffic safety at controlled intersections within the city, countdown timers are installed to display the remaining duration of the traffic signal. The timer can indicate the remaining duration of either the green or the red traffic signal.

Aluminum supports used in traffic signal installations offer advantages over conventional steel supports, including a long service life, ease of installation, aesthetic appeal, corrosion resistance, and passive safety for road users.

Upon impact with an aluminum support, the vehicle will continue to move at the same or a lower speed, mitigating severe consequences for the driver and passengers resulting from the collision.

Video, infrared, and inductive loop vehicle detectors are installed at signalized intersections to optimize traffic flow.

All equipment installed at signalized intersections is certified in the Republic of Kazakhstan and designed to operate in harsh climatic conditions within a temperature range of -45 to +60 degrees Celsius.

SMEU Astana LLP is an official dealer in the Republic of Kazakhstan for ROSA, a manufacturer of aluminum supports and lighting equipment.

The ROSA product line includes:

1. Park and street lighting poles;
2. Park lighting poles with a synthetic external coating;
3. Post-top luminaires and bracket systems;
4. Park and street luminaires;
5. Aluminum traffic, traffic signal, and pedestrian poles;

SMEU Astana LLP supplies, installs, commissions, and maintains LED variable message signs throughout the Republic of Kazakhstan.

LED displays and variable message signs are an effective means of providing road users with timely information on the current traffic situation along their route, enabling the rapid redistribution of traffic flow to less congested areas of the urban road network.

Variable message signs can inform drivers about speed limits on specific road sections, real-time traffic conditions, traffic accidents along their route, the location of key facilities and parking areas, detour routes, and other essential information for road users.

LED signs offer high-contrast visibility in all lighting conditions, crucial for traffic safety both in urban areas and on open roads.

Variable message signs are classified into several types:

  • Dynamic signs display a limited set of characters on the screen. Typically, these include speed limit signs, warning signs, lane direction signs, reversible lane signals, etc., predefined by scenarios for a specific road section.
  • Dynamic, full-color (two-color) freely programmable signs with an unlimited set of characters displayed on the screen. These screens can display any information necessary for road users, regardless of the scenario.
  • Freely programmable monochrome or two-color scrolling text displays for displaying text information only.
  • Combined displays consisting of two parts: a full-color display and a text line display for parallel display of graphic and text information.

LED variable message signs are available in various types and sizes.

VMS

SMEU Astana LLP provides supply, installation, commissioning, and ongoing technical maintenance of prismatic variable message road signs.

The prismatic road sign utilizes a system of rotating triangular prisms that can display three different images sequentially in a single plane through synchronous rotation.

The prismatic variable message sign is installed either separately on a galvanized metal structure or in conjunction with information board road signs.

The Intelligent Traffic Management System is specialized software from Swarco Inc., a leading manufacturer in the field of ITS, and an interconnected complex of high-tech equipment for traffic organization and management.

The system's main purpose is:

1. To optimize traffic flow at signalized intersections to reduce traffic delays;
2. Reduction of travel time;
3. Increasing the operational speed of public transportation.

The hardware and software include the following subsystems: centralized traffic management, a video surveillance and traffic monitoring system, and variable message sign management.

The operation of the entire system is based on the collection and analysis of real-time data from detectors, historical operational data, and data from public transportation navigation equipment, if a priority program is implemented. All information is received at the Traffic Management Center (ЦУТ), from which coordinated management of all traffic within the city is executed.

Specialized software coordinates the operation of traffic controllers for traffic lights, enabling traffic regulation in both adaptive mode and coordination plan selection mode.

SIGNFLASH light emitting diode indicating system

SIGNFLASH system is designed to be installed on the existing “pedestrian crossing” signs in the area of unregulated pedestrian overpass of the traffic way. The system is automatically activated at the moment pedestrians appear in the crossing wait area and works all the time when they are straight at the crossings. Systems operation involves variable flashing of two yellow high intensity light-emitting-diode sources. Indicating light is directed towards moving vehicle, approaching pedestrian crossing, drawing extra attention of drivers to this part of traffic way. Photovoltaic power supply is possible.

In this case two independent controlling units are necessary, which allow to program the work of each system separately.

Advantages of such independent control are the following:

- independent adjustment of radiant power of light-emitting diodes for two indicating systems;
- independent adjustment of indication frequency of two systems;

- possible constant indication of LEVELITE system regardless of SIGNFLASH system operation.

Important: ~220V source is necessary!

Coordinated control of two indicating systems
